A market or station installation can run into hundreds of camera points, and at that scale the network backbone — not the cameras themselves — is what makes or breaks the project. Public spaces need CCTV and public announcement systems to work together, not as separate procurements from separate vendors — a security event that can’t be paired with an immediate public announcement loses most of its value in a crowd of thousands. Documentation Discipline Wins the Tender Before the Installation Starts
Public sector projects live and die on paperwork as much as engineering. Certification documents, local-content declarations, and technical compliance sheets need to match the tender specification precisely — a mismatch as small as a resolution figure quoted in the wrong unit can trigger disqualification during technical evaluation, a mistake we’ve seen sink otherwise well-priced, well-engineered bids.
Maintenance Access Without Disrupting Operations
A station or market never closes for a convenient maintenance window the way a private office does, which makes ongoing serviceability a design consideration from day one, not an afterthought handled after handover. Camera and switch positions need to be physically accessible for cleaning, lens adjustment and fault diagnosis without requiring platform closures or disrupting the flow of a busy market during trading hours.
This is also where a documented, standing maintenance relationship — the same preventive maintenance approach that works for commercial clients — matters even more for public infrastructure, since a fault left unaddressed on a public safety system carries reputational and safety consequences well beyond a typical commercial site. Build a realistic maintenance access plan into the proposal itself, not as a separate conversation after the contract is signed.
Vandalism and Tamper Resistance as a Baseline Spec
Public-facing equipment in high-footfall areas takes physical abuse that a corporate office camera never sees — casual vandalism, accidental knocks from luggage trolleys and market carts, and occasional deliberate tampering near sensitive zones. Camera housings and mounting hardware for these environments need a genuinely higher physical durability spec than a standard commercial installation, and this is a line item worth calling out explicitly in a tender response rather than assuming the evaluator will infer it from a generic IP-rating figure. A camera that looks identical on a spec sheet to an office-grade unit but lacks reinforced housing will show visible wear and tear within months in a station or market environment, and a tender committee that has seen this failure before will ask about it directly.
Multi-Stakeholder Ownership Is the Norm, Not the Exception
A railway station or municipal market rarely has a single decision-maker the way a private commercial site does — railway zone authorities, municipal corporations, local police, and sometimes a private concessionaire operating a section of the property may all have a stake in the same installation. Clarify ownership and approval chains before finalising a technical proposal, since a design approved by one stakeholder can still be rejected by another with overlapping authority. Building in a stakeholder sign-off checklist as part of the project plan, rather than assuming a single approval covers the full scope, prevents costly late-stage redesigns that are far more common on public projects than private ones.
Budgeting for Phased Rollouts
Large public infrastructure projects rarely get funded and built in a single phase — budget cycles, approval layers and construction schedules typically force a station or market rollout across multiple phases spanning months or years. Design the network architecture from the start to support this reality: zones and switch clusters that can be commissioned independently as each phase completes, rather than a single design that only functions once every camera across the entire site is installed. Integrators who plan for phased commissioning from day one avoid the costly redesigns that come from bolting later phases onto an architecture that assumed a single, complete rollout.
