There’s a question every integrator hears in almost every commercial meeting, usually right after the chai arrives: “Sir, should we go for IP cameras or the normal ones?”
The uncomfortable truth is how that question usually gets answered. Some integrators push IP on every project because the ticket size is bigger. Others quote AHD everywhere because it’s easier to win on price. Both are answering based on their own business, not the client’s site.
The integrators who build lasting reputations do it differently. They recommend the right technology for that client, that building and that budget, and they can explain the reasoning in plain language. That’s what this guide is for.
We’ve been manufacturing both technologies in Delhi since 1991, so we have no side to take here. We make AHD cameras and DVRs, and we make IP-based NVRs and PoE switches. What follows is the comparison we’d give you across the counter.
Veterans can skip this part, though it’s worth keeping handy because it’s exactly how you should explain the difference to clients.
AHD (Analog High Definition) sends video from the camera to a DVR over coaxial cable. The same familiar cable this industry has used for decades, except it now carries genuinely sharp HD footage, from 2.0MP up to 5MP. The DVR does the heavy lifting: converting, compressing and recording everything.
IP (Internet Protocol) cameras are small computers, in effect. Each camera processes its own video and sends it as data over a network cable to an NVR, much the way your laptop talks to your router. Being a network device, an IP camera can do smarter things: higher resolutions, better analytics, installations that scale across buildings.
Everything else in this debate flows from that one difference. AHD is a video system. IP is a network.
Image quality. Let’s clear up a myth before anything else: AHD is not “blurry old CCTV.” A modern 5MP AHD camera paired with a 5MP DVR produces footage sharp enough to identify faces at a counter and read activity across a shop floor, and for most commercial sites in India that is precisely the job.
IP’s advantage is the ceiling. When a client genuinely needs very high resolutions, wide-area detail or advanced analytics, IP is where that lives. The honest question to ask yourself is whether the 1,200 sq ft garment showroom in front of you needs that ceiling, or whether it needs six sharp cameras and a clean install. Match resolution to purpose, not to ego.
Cabling and installation. This one depends entirely on the building. AHD runs on coax with separate power, or reuses existing coax, which is a huge advantage in retrofits. If a building already has decent coaxial cabling from an older system, AHD lets you upgrade the cameras and DVR without ripping open a single wall. Clients love hearing that sentence.
IP with PoE runs a single network cable to each camera, carrying both power and data. Fewer wires, no separate power points at each camera, faster and cleaner installs, provided you’re cabling fresh. Pair the cameras with the right switch from our Premium or Ultra series, and remember the extended-mode option, up to 250 metres on our long-range PoE switches, for those warehouse runs where standard Ethernet’s 100-metre limit becomes a real problem. The working rule: existing coax in good condition means AHD saves the client real money. Fresh cabling on a larger site, and PoE’s single-cable simplicity usually wins.
Cost. Camera for camera, channel for channel, AHD delivers HD surveillance at a noticeably lower system cost once you count cameras, recorder and cabling together. For a client with 8 to 16 cameras and a firm budget, AHD is very often the honest recommendation.
IP costs more upfront, but two things soften that over time. H.265+ compression on our NVRs shrinks storage needs substantially, and hard disks are a bigger slice of system cost than most clients realise. IP systems also expand more gracefully, since adding cameras to a network is easier than adding them to a fully loaded DVR. So quote total cost of ownership, not just the BOQ.
Scalability. IP wins this one clearly. The better question is whether it matters for the client in front of you. If they have one site, a defined camera count and no expansion plans, scalability is a feature they’ll pay for and never use. If they’re a growing business with multiple branches, a warehouse coming up next year, or a head office that wants to view all locations centrally, IP’s network architecture was built for exactly that. Ask them directly: “Where do you see this business in three years?” The answer scopes the system better than any spec sheet.
Remote viewing. Ten years ago this was IP’s trump card. Not anymore. Whether the site runs on our DVRs or NVRs, clients get free CMS software and mobile apps for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Live view, playback, the works, with no licence fees. Demonstrate it on your phone during the meeting; it closes deals regardless of which technology sits behind it.
Audio. Here’s one a surprising number of integrators miss. If a commercial client wants audio at the cash counter or reception, you don’t need to jump to IP for it. Our audio-over-coax (AOC) cameras carry sound on the same coaxial cable. No extra wire, no separate mic cabling, no drama. Bring it up in the pitch — most clients have never heard of it.
One more thing, because this is 2026 and the ground has shifted. Since the new certification regime took full effect in April, internet-connected cameras sold in India must meet strict security norms, and the big Chinese brands that dominated the cheap-IP segment are effectively out of the market.
For your recommendation, that means two things. First, the “cheap imported IP camera” your clients used to compare your quote against has largely disappeared, so the price conversation is more honest now. Second, whichever technology you recommend, the manufacturer’s compliance story is now part of your pitch. Equipment that’s BIS, CE and FCC certified and made in India, at a real factory like our Okhla facility, is what procurement teams are asking for by name. Put it in your proposal either way.
Small retail shop or office (4–8 cameras): AHD. Sharp footage, simple install, unbeatable value. A 5MP DVR with 5MP cameras will genuinely impress them.
• Medium showroom, restaurant, clinic (8–16 cameras): AHD in most cases, with AOC cameras at counters and reception. Consider IP only if they’re planning more branches.
• Retrofit on existing coax: AHD, almost always. Reusing good cabling puts money straight back into the client’s pocket and credit into your reputation.
• Large office, factory, warehouse (16+ cameras, fresh cabling): IP with PoE. An H.265+ NVR, a properly sized PoE switch with 25–30% power headroom, and single-cable runs to every camera.
• Multi-site business wanting central monitoring: IP. This is what the architecture was made for.
• Remote corners — far gates, plots, construction sites, farms: neither cable-based option. Quote a 4G SIM-based or solar camera and solve the “impossible” position nobody else could.
And remember that hybrid is not a compromise. It’s often the smartest quote in the room: AHD for the main premises, IP for the new wing, a 4G camera at the boundary. One brand, one app, one warranty. Clients don’t buy technologies, they buy outcomes.
There’s no winner in “AHD vs IP.” There’s only the right answer for the site in front of you. The integrator who recommends AHD when it’s honest, IP when it’s justified and hybrid when it’s clever is the integrator whose clients stop taking other quotes.
